Riverine Herald

Echuca Newspaper

The Riverine Herald newspaper was founded on 1st July 1863. The Riverine Herald'spaper's first editor was Robert Ross Haverfield who was born in Bideford, North Devon, England in 1819. Joint owners of the paper were James Joseph Casey (1831-1913) and Angus Mackay (1824-1886) who was also a part owner of the Bendigo Advertiser.

In 1853 when Miners were revolting against the licensing system Haverfield started the Bendigo Advertiser newspaper to promote their cause. As a result of his travels and the close relationship he formed with local Aborigines, whose language he spoke, he used the paper to make the public aware of their plight.
