P.S. NileEchuca Paddlesteamer
The Nile was built at Echuca by Burkett & Wilson in October 1885, she was 70 feet in length and was re-fitted in 1895. She traded on the Darling River for many years, and was eventually destroyed by fire at Bourke in 1926. Not much was left of her except for the machinery, the steam engine and boiler were later scrapped, however the paddle wheels and shafting were salvaged and preserved. For many years they stood on a concrete base in the Bourke Township until about 9 years ago when they were fitted to the new tourist vessel the P.V. Jandra which operates on a small section of the Darling from Kidman's Camp, near the North Bourke Bridge. Thanks to Leith Hall who provided the above information. |
