Did you know - Echuca was founded by Henry Hopwood, an ex-convict who in 1850 bought a small punt which operated across the Murray River. The settlement was originally know as 'Hopwoods Ferry until named 'Echuca' in 1854.

On the other side of Hopwood Place is Hopwood Gardens. It includes a lawned area with picnic area and childrens' play facilities. Bullock teams waiting to cross the river on Hopwood's punt once gathered here. Nearby, in Murray Esplanade, is a log buggy which once transported red gum logs from the forests to the local sawmills and, in an adjacent lawned area, the barge Alison (1907).
